Baja SAE Ohio: 9/27/2026
Grace has been competing in Baja SAE since May of 2025. Baja SAE is a competitive collegiate design series that helps students apply and practice engineering theory in a real-world setting. Students get to plan, design, build, and race an off-roading vehicle. The car goes through a series of competitions and tests where Grace ranks against other colleges and universities. The team strives for excellence in both aesthetics and functionality, competing in events like maneuverability, design presentation, and hill Climb.
The Engine and Drivetrain team is responsible for the engine, front and rear differentials, gearbox, and driveshaft. They work to optimize the torque and horsepower of the entire drivetrain.
The Suspension and Steering team is responsible for designing and optimizing the shocks, control arms, suspension components, and steering components. They handle everything from the steering wheel to the tires.
The Chassis and Fabrication team is responsible for the frame design and all welding. They help optimize the entire car for durability and repairability. Welding skills are really helpful for this role, but not required.
The Ergonomics and Safety team is responsible for handling driver comfort, rules compliance, and all electrical systems.
The Brakes team is responsible for the brakes, including the rotors, brake lines, and pedals. Passing the brake check at competition is required to compete in the endurance race, so this system working is vital

Each section works in a similar way but focuses on a different part of the car. For example, the suspension team handles the design, testing, and manufacturing of the car’s suspension components. Other sections follow the same general process for their parts of the car.
No. Experience with CAD, technical software, or cars is helpful, but it is not required. You can learn many of these skills while working with the team. We also have non-technical positions that do not require any previous automotive or software experience.
Baja SAE gives you a chance to use what you have learned in class on a real project. Depending on your role, you can gain experience with design, manufacturing, project management, budgeting, marketing, sponsorships, communication, and teamwork.
Working on the team also teaches you how to solve problems, work with others, and meet deadlines. No matter how you are involved, Baja SAE gives you useful experience to include on a résumé and discuss in interviews.
