Department of Engineering

Changing the world starts here, in the Department of Engineering.

Let us train and equip you to be an engineer for the global good.

We recognize that God, the creator of the universe, is the greatest engineer of all. We strive to honor Him and His creation through the skills of engineering—a gift that, if stewarded correctly, can bring sustainable water sources to developing countries, eliminate pollution, and provide hope to the child with deformed extremities. Grace College graduates will be engineered to serve.

Approach

Our approach is three-pronged: teach you theory, mentor you through hands-on practice and inspire you to use the gifts God gave you to improve the lives of others. This is the way we intersect faith and science, and we do it in the most prime location. As the “Orthopedic Capital of the World,” we have intimate interaction with a global industry that is focused on mechanical design and cutting-edge manufacturing.

Grace College Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering students to compete in Baja SAE 2025 race. Students get experience building a Baja racer.
Engineering Baja SAE

Grace College’s ABET-accredited bachelor of mechanical engineering program recently formed a team to compete in the Baja Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), an inter-collegiate design competition where students design, build, and race off-road vehicles. The project simulates real-world engineering, requiring students to meet deadlines, manage a budget, and complete testing. The project will culminate May 1-4, 2025, in Marana, Arizona, where the team will put their Baja racer to the test. Grace’s team will compete against nearly 80 other schools in maneuverability, hill climbing, sled pulling, shock testing, acceleration, and endurance to determine which team built the best kart.

Community Outreach Projects

Grace faculty and students partner with Edgewood Middle School’s STEM program in two community-focused initiatives: “GoBabyGo!, an annual program that brings together professional engineers, college students, and middle schoolers to modify and customize volt-powered vehicles for toddlers who move differently, and “Enabling the Future,” a volunteer organization providing resources for 3D printing prosthetic hands.

Helping the Community

During her summer internship, Natalie Bontrager worked in the Grace College Department of Engineering in partnership with J.C. Innovation’s/ Helping Hand Program to provide cost-free prosthetics for kids in need. Natalie was assigned to increase the functionality of a prosthetic hand for a local 5-year-old, Zoe.

Partnering for Good

Know someone with limb difference? We can help! We are working with J.C. Innovations who partners with individuals in Northern Indiana with limb difference to provide expanded capabilities by leveraging 3D printing, engineering expertise, and understanding.

Maximizing Impact by helping communities through engineering
Maximizing Impact

Grace Student, Pavle Popovic spent his summer internship working with Design Outreach, a nonprofit organization that develops innovative solutions for partners combating global poverty. Pavle’s role was to help design and test a new part for a water pump to be installed in the developing world. Pavle worked with these goals in mind: maximize impact and ensure sustainability.

Grace Engineering Activities

Grace College’s Department of Engineering promotes the application of science & technology at an engineering school in Indiana.
Grace Engineering Camp

Does your child enjoy hands-on experiences, solving unique problems, or learning about new ideas? If so, Grace Engineering Summer Camps are made just for them! Your student will have the opportunity to learn the basics of mechanical engineering, at an engineering school in Indiana, by exploring computer-aided design (CAD), 3D printing, drag racing, robotics, and programming.

Grace Engineering CO2 Drag Race Winners from 2019
Annual CO2 Dragster Race - February 3, 2024

Do you have an interest in racing CO2 dragsters? For this competition, participants will be tasked with designing their very own CO2 dragster to race against others in their division. Registration is free. High school students have the opportunity to compete for scholarships and the winners will receive a cash prize!
