Entering college without a declared major isn’t “being lost;” it’s the beginning of a guided discovery. At Grace College, we partner with you to develop your God-given strengths and step into the calling for which God has created you. We want to help you select a major and prepare you for a life of purpose and impact.

The Foundation

Every journey begins with self-discovery. During your first session of courses, you will participate in First-Year Foundations, a course designed to bridge the gap between high school and your professional future.

CORE COMPONENTS OF FIRST-YEAR FOUNDATIONS

PathwayU Assessment: Experience a scientific approach to aligning your unique interests and values with specific career paths.

StrengthsFinder: Identify your natural talents and learn how to leverage them into a competitive advantage.

Reflective Curriculum: You won’t just take a test and file it away. Through two core assignments, you will perform a deep dive into your results, researching specific career pathways that resonate with your profile.

THE CAREER CONNECTIONS ADVANTAGE

While other students are assigned to broad academic departments, Discovery Track students receive specialized 1-on-1 support. You will be personally advised by the director of the Center for Career Connections. This ensures your academic path is always aligned with your eventual career goals.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN YOUR ADVISING SESSIONS:

1. Assessment Review: You’ll receive a professional breakdown of your PathwayU and StrengthsFinder results.

2. Strategic Course Selection: Your advisor will help you pick introductory courses that serve as previews to potential majors.

3. Faculty Connections: The director will facilitate meetings with professors in various departments to give you an insider’s view of different fields.

4. Real-World Clarity: Shadow professionals to test-drive different careers before landing on an academic path.

The Session System: Exploration Without Risk

A common fear for undecided students is falling behind. Because we operate on a 15-week semester with two 7.5-week sessions, we have built-in flexibility that a traditional semester system lacks.

Focused Learning: You only take 3-4 courses at a time. This allows you to dive deep into an introductory major course while simultaneously completing general education requirements.

Course Discovery: Most academic pathways provide flexibility to allow students to take additional courses beyond their major requirements. This allows for breathing room to switch majors without extending your graduation date.

Stay on Track: You can explore, pivot, and experiment while still walking across the stage with your peers in three or four years.
