Why the Pulmonary Function Test?

The Pulmonary Function Test

The pulmonary function test is a non-invasive, pain-free way to measure how well the lungs breathe in and out air. This assessment can be performed before exercising, and it gives a good picture of the individual’s typical breathing pattern. It can also provide insight to if the lungs are limiting exercise performance. Types of pulmonary function tests (like the Simple Spirometry test) can identify if exercise-induced asthma or exercise-induced bronchoconstriction is present.

Testing the lungs for exercise assessments can be really helpful in pinpointing potential causes for shortness of breath during exercise, also. And if asthma or other lung-restricting disorders are present, that could impact the individual’s exercise performance and how we set up a training program for them.

When preparing for a pulmonary function test, it’s best to wear loose clothes that won’t restrict breathing, and don’t engage in intense exercise beforehand. Smoking and heavy meals should also be avoided before performing this assessment.
