“[Effective communication],” claims the ancient orator and Roman Consul Cicero, “it is the single most difficult thing of all,” because there is no discipline so wholly subject to the varying and changing needs of an audience and reflective of the speaker’s ability to read and adapt to the situation. Effective business communication relies wholly on the speaker’s ability to assess subtle nuances of a situation, and spontaneously craft the right message, to the right audience, through the right medium, at the right time, in the right way, with the right words, all while being ever ready and able to modify the message as the situation changes. And all while demonstrative good business acumen.
Our business communication major is founded on the belief that God made humans inherently communicative. Biblical examples abound, with communicators such as Paul, Luke, and even Jesus showing how messages can be tailored to audiences in order to effectuate significant change. In the Business Communication major, students learn how to effectively connect and communicate with people, whether across a boardroom table or a global market.
As a business communication major, you’ll dive into your core courses, which include topics such as communication theory, persuasion, and public relations, alongside a strong foundation in business essentials like management, marketing, accounting, and business law. You’ll also choose electives that fit your unique interests: social media communication, digital publishing, multicultural psychology, or argumentation and debate. Students seeking a truly global perspective can even complete a Budapest Intensive, studying cross-cultural approaches to public relations and intercultural communication in an international business context.
