The Grace College Office of Faith, Learning & Scholarship welcomes Dr. Derek Schuurman, co-author of the book “A Christian Field Guide to Technology for Engineers and Designers.” Schurrman will discuss artificial intelligence through the lens of biblical and secular narratives as part of Grace’s Lyceum Lecture series on Thursday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. The free event is open to the public and will take place in Westminster Hall, 105 9th St., Winona Lake. Light refreshments will be served.
“Dr. Schuurman is a computer scientist at Calvin University, but he is also more than a mere computer scientist,” said Dr. Ryan Johnson, professor of mathematics at Grace College. “He writes and speaks on a vast array of topics; insightfully wrestling with how our Christian faith informs how we consider all aspects of life. Truly, Dr. Schuurman lives out the words of Kuyper, ‘There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is sovereign over all, does not cry ‘Mine!’”
In “A Christian Field Guide to Technology for Engineers and Designers,” Schuurman and co-authors Ethan J. Brue and Steven H. VanderLeest discuss how technology can be used as a tool for Christians to love God and others through their work. In addition, Schuurman writes for the Christian Scholars Review Blog, where he offers advice to young scholars, reviews books and describes his vision for Christian general education.
Schuurman serves as the chair of the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Faith and Technology at Calvin University. He is particularly interested in teaching and studying issues related to faith and computer technology. Schuurman holds a doctorate from McMaster University and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo.
Copies of Schuurman’s book, “A Christian Field Guide to Technology for Engineers and Designers,” will be available for purchase at the event. To learn more about Schuurman’s work, go to calvin.edu/people/derek-schuurman.
