Special Education License: Intense Intervention Program

  • Online

Add Intense Intervention to your Indiana Teaching License With Our Special Education Online Program.

Meeting Needs . . . One Child at a Time

If you are in the field of education, you know that special education teachers are in great demand across the nation, particularly in teaching students with significant disabilities.

The intense intervention graduate special education online program allows undergraduate students actively pursuing the mild intervention licensure, as well as professional educators in the field who already have their mild intervention license, to add to their pedagogical repertoire the knowledge and skills in teaching students P-12 who require intense interventions. Candidates who complete this 15-hour program are eligible for exceptional needs: intense intervention license through the Indiana Department of Education.

The curriculum for this graduate-level special education license has been intentionally developed by experts in the field of significant disabilities, autism, and communication disorders. The scope of the curriculum is focused on understanding and meeting the intense needs of the learner with exceptionalities.

The online coursework provides opportunities to delve into evidence-based practices, theoretical applications, legal implications, as well as current trends all while collaborating with a cohort of learners. A variety of instructional tasks and assessments allow candidates the opportunity to demonstrate proficiency in their knowledge and skills.

The clinical experiences are designed with a scaffolded approach that varies in intensity and developmental levels. Experiences range from observations to supervised teaching with a focus on the gradual development of competency in practice. Field and clinical experiences provide teacher candidates opportunities to view the entire scope of teaching students with significant disabilities and to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be effective practitioners.  Each course in the Intense Intervention Licensure Program requires a field or clinical component which allows for authentic connections, applications, and practice during the course of study.

What is an intense intervention special education license?

The intense intervention license is an advanced special education licensure option, specifically designed for educators who work with preschool through 12th-grade students who require intensive intervention due to significant disabilities. At Grace College, this graduate-level online licensure program (15 credit hours) prepares you for the exceptional needs: an intense intervention license through the Indiana Department of Education. It builds on your mild intervention license (or your pursuit of it) by deepening your knowledge and skills for high-need student populations.

What are the prerequisites for enrolling in an intense intervention licensure program?

To enroll in the intense intervention licensure program at Grace, you must either:
Be an undergraduate student actively pursuing a mild intervention special education license or
Be a professional educator who already holds a mild intervention license. This ensures you have the foundational credential before adding this advanced specialization.

What topics are covered in an Intense Intervention program?

In this licensure program, you’ll engage in coursework and clinical experiences that cover:

  • Evidence-based practices for students with significant disabilities, autism, and communication disorders.
  • Legal, government, and educational frameworks specific to intense intervention.
  • Assessment, instruction, intervention supports, communication, behavior management, and health for students with intense needs.
  • Real-world field or clinical components in each course to apply your learning in authentic settings.
What types of students will I be qualified to teach with this license?

With a license in intense intervention, you’ll be qualified to teach P-12 students who require intensive interventions. This means students with significant disabilities, complex communication or behavioral needs, or other exceptionalities that require specialized instruction beyond typical special education supports.
