Computer Science Major – Application Development

  • On-Campus

The Computer Science Major with a focus on Application Development at Grace College equips students to design, build, and maintain software applications that solve real-world problems. Whether you’re passionate about developing mobile apps, web platforms, or enterprise systems, this program provides a solid foundation in programming, systems analysis, and user-focused design.

Offered as a hybrid degree through a partnership with the Lower Cost Models for Independent Colleges Consortium (LCMC), the program combines the flexibility of online courses with the personal attention of on-campus instruction. Students learn industry-relevant skills using tools and technologies shaped by input from leading tech companies—including Google.

At Grace College, your education is more than technical. You’ll develop your coding skills while grounded in a biblical worldview, ensuring your work reflects both innovation and integrity. The program includes strong support in mathematics and business, preparing you to understand both the technical and strategic aspects of application development.

Real-world experience is a key part of this major. You’ll complete hands-on projects, internships, and collaborative coursework that mirror the challenges faced in today’s software development environments.

If you’re driven to create meaningful, user-centered technology—and want to do so with purpose—Grace College is the place to begin.

Application Development Degree FAQs

What is application development in computer science?

What is application development? Application development is the process of developing mobile or web apps. This process usually involves a thorough understanding of phone operating systems, user friendliness, app design, and how to navigate cross-platform issues.

What is computer science?

Computer science focuses on information dissemination, problem-solving, integrating computers into other forms of technology, and making tasks faster and easier through tools such as generative AI. A large component of this field is creating ways to access information quickly and using it efficiently and effectively. Read our blog, Computer Science FAQs: What is Computer Science? for more information about a computer science degree.

Is computer science hard?

It’s true that computer science is a hard major, but it’s perfect for problem-solvers and critical thinkers. At Grace, our computer science classes often include students with different levels of experience, and our program is designed so that a student with no experience can succeed alongside one with a background in programming.

What does faith integration look like for computer science?

Christian ethics are vital to maintaining the integrity of computer science applications. While technology can make tasks efficient and easy, it can also be exploited and corrupted. When you prioritize your faith over profit, you create programs, coding, and other resources that truly benefit consumers on both practical and moral levels.

Explore Dr. Amy Feaver’s devotional to discover how faith and computer science can go hand in hand.

What careers can you pursue in application development?

Application development careers, such as software or mobile app developers, are typically based on designing, creating, and upgrading mobile or web apps. Companies look for application developers who create designs that are usable and intuitive for their targeted audience.

What programming skills do you need for application development?

According to Dr. Amy Feaver, there are three types of application development (front-end, back-end, and full stack). Every developer should be able to use version control (Git) and understand the basics of HTML & CSS. The more technical back-end skills are languages such as Python, Java, and JavaScript, as well as the ability to write good, efficient algorithms.

Voices of Grace

“Being one of the first students to fully go through this program, I didn’t know what to expect. However, I left with a greater interest in computer science, the ability to learn new languages and structures, and goal of pursuing a grad degree in data science.”
