The Grace Wind Ensemble will perform its fall concert, “Sounds You Know By Heart And Others You Should” on Sunday, March 22, at 4 p.m. at the Warsaw Community High School Performing Arts Center, 1 Tiger Ln., Warsaw. The concert is free and open to the public. Doors open at 3:30 p.m.
“I am most excited for the song ‘Cherry Blossom Brilliance,’” said Eric Criss, the ensemble’s director. “Audience members will find this piece a refreshing selection, reflective of beautiful cherry blossoms about to bloom this spring. It is a new piece I have not performed before, and it is also the most challenging work in the program. Don’t be mistaken, though, I am excited about the others, too.”
As the concert title suggests, the Grace College Wind Ensemble’s program mostly features pop concert selections with a few others, like “Cherry Blossom Brilliance,” which the audience may not be familiar with, but should be, according to Criss.
The concert will open with the “Marvel Studios Fanfare” and several other familiar tunes from the motion picture “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Next, the band will feature Barry Frisinger on trumpet and Dan Slaven on alto sax, each performing a solo on “Star Dust,” a Hoagy Carmichael tune made famous by Artie Shaw in the 1940s. The concert will close with music from the iconic 1970s group ABBA, featuring “I Have A Dream,” “Mamma Mia,” and, of course, “Dancing Queen,” among many others.
The band, which rehearses weekly on the Grace College campus, is a collection of Grace students and Warsaw/Winona Lake community members.
The Grace Wind Ensemble Spring Concert is a part of the Grace College & The Village at Winona Festival of Music. Upcoming concerts include the Lancer Chorus/Community Arts Program Spring Concert on April 18 and the Worship Arts Student Recital on May 2.
