An environmental art, or eco art, major combines ecology and visual arts. Whether it’s through design software, a paintbrush, or a camera, you’ll learn to use both art and science to depict natural environments and advocate for good stewardship.
Our program is founded on God’s role as Creator and our obligation to steward His Creation well. As an eco art student, you’ll hone your artistic abilities, scientific expertise, and knowledge of political systems to obey His mandate to preserve and protect the environment.
Your initial visual arts classes will instruct you in the fundamentals of art and design across a variety of media. Then, your concentration will determine which specialized visual arts classes you’ll take.
With a graphic design concentration, you’ll use online software to create compelling and attractive designs. Your coursework will take you through typography, production processes, and creative ideation, building the skills to communicate ideas visually and persuasively — including ideas about the natural world.
As an eco art major, you’ll also dive into environmental sciences. Prepare for classes that are “hands-on and feet-wet,” in which you’ll participate in everything from holding prescribed burns in prairies to donning waders and testing local water quality. You’ll also take government courses, which will equip you to advocate effectively and powerfully for the environment.
The environmental art program will culminate in a senior thesis portfolio project, where you’ll compile and present your work at a public exhibition.
At Grace, we guarantee career experience by requiring every student to complete an internship experience. As an eco art major, you’ll have the opportunity to work for the Lilly Center for Lakes and Streams, a nonprofit research center and division of Grace College.
Upon graduation, you’ll be prepared to steward and advocate for the environment through visual communication design, whether that looks like working as a brand designer for a conservation nonprofit or a visual storyteller for an environmental organization.
