Is a Christian College Education Worth the Investment?

Is attending a top Christian college worth the investment?

Choosing a college is a process. The time, energy, and numbers involved can be overwhelming. There are so many factors to consider, but at the end of the day, you have to decide what you value the most and what school will foster those values in your education and your day-to-day life.

Weigh your options, consider the pros and cons, and discover what makes going to a top Christian college worth the investment.

Your Community Builds Who You Are

Have you heard the old adage, “you are who you hang with?” While it’s not entirely true, we do believe the sentiment here is correct — the people you surround yourself with will define who you are becoming.

During your college years, you will create relationships with classmates, faculty, and members of your community that will uplift and encourage you. A Christian community will give you a space to express diversity in ideas, beliefs, and even doubts.

As Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “A Christian fellowship lives and exists by the intercession of its members for one another, or it collapses.” Christian college communities are built on service, humility, and togetherness as students navigate new experiences side by side. Your college environment matters, so find a college where people are rooting for you and your walk with Christ and not against it.

Thoughtful Scholarship and Career Preparation

Making God the center of your education doesn’t distract from academics, it gives purpose to it.

One of the absolute best things about Christian college is the way that your highly intelligent and skilled professors model the work ethic they teach. With a wealth of knowledge and practical experience in their field, they are even more committed to serving God in that field. These individuals are passionate about helping you marry your scholarship with your discipleship. They will help you develop insight and perspective in your classes, and prepare you for your future career. Your worldview will be transformed through these experiences and when you graduate, you will go forward with confidence.

Take Dr. Roger Stichter, our accounting professor, for example. Before the calculators ever come out or the powerpoint projects on the screen, he takes time to lead his class in devotions. (He compiled these in a book!) He instills in his students the power of integrity on the job as they deal with numbers, and teaches them to be good stewards of money as he talks about in his second book, The Principle of Maximums

And let us tell you about Dr. Nate Bosch, professor of environmental science and director of the Lilly Center for Lakes and Streams. Dr. Bosch specializes in lakes, streams, wetlands, prairies, and many other ecosystems and forms of life in creation. His studies allow him to spend ample time in God’s creation, and he leads his students to see that studying the creation teaches us more about the Creator himself.

This just isn’t the kind of instruction found at large public state schools.

Spiritual Resources Are Always Available

Spiritual resources are a significant part of your Christian formation, and they’re everywhere on a Christian college campus. Regular chapel services with a variety of speakers and worship sessions will uplift you; Bible studies with fellow students will nurture you; prayer circles and churches in the area will surround you.

If you’re not convinced these resources make a Christian college worth it, we encourage you to dig into these resources as you can. Tune into a chapel service and talk to current students about what you care about. Public schools may have a club or two for Christian students, but they just don’t have the depth and breadth of resources needed for training and equipping young kingdom-minded individuals.  As you take advantage of these resources around you, you’ll be investing in more than a four-year degree while at college — you’ll be investing in HIS kingdom.

The Freedom to Choose

Attending a top Christian college is ultimately a choice that you get to make. And we highly recommend you choose the best Christian college in Indiana — Grace!

The way of Grace leads us to focus on the most important part of who you are — your faith. This just isn’t the approach of most universities in our nation, and it’s your decision to step into an environment where faith saturates your athletics, your academics, your clubs, and your personal development.

Attending a top Christian college will encourage you toward deeper faith and wisdom, and it will also give you the freedom and space that you need to make your own choices and decide who you want to be and what you want to be about.

So, is attending a Christian college worth the investment?
