Instructional Technology in Education: Eight Platforms You Need as a Future Teacher
As time moves forward and technology develops, classrooms are adapting to emerging technology and education by learning how to incorporate instructional technology in education. In order to fully understand these new forms of learning, it’s important that teachers learn and utilize technology platforms to their fullest potential. These are the top eight instructional technology platforms that teachers should learn for their years in the classroom, whether in-person or virtual.
1. SAMR Framework
The SAMR framework aims to take the use of classroom technology from enhancement to transformation. The acronym SAMR stands for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition. This model was created to give teachers a common language in instructional technology. You can integrate the SAMR Framework within lesson planning with the goal of leading students into transformative learning.
2. MimioStudio
MimioStudio is an interactive whiteboard technology software that can be used for collaborative lesson plans and classroom assessments. Education students receive MimioStudio free from Grace College for their college classes and as instructional technology in education for their future classrooms.
3. The 1:1 Classroom
A 1:1 classroom means that every student in a school or district is provided with their own laptop, netbook, tablet, or other mobile computing device. This model of emerging technology and education is a great way to tailor learning experiences for students, improve teacher to student communication, and increase student engagement. Students at Grace are taught how to use iPads in a classroom setting so that they can implement 1:1 learning in their future classroom.
4. ISTE and ISTE Standards for Educators
ISTE (International Society of Technology Education) Standards for Students and ISTE Standards for Educators is a system of seven values that outline the characteristics that deepen and define a teacher’s impact. Education coursework at Grace College is aligned to the ISTE Standards, which include these seven educator standards to help empower students: learner, leader, citizen, collaborator, designer, facilitator, and analyst.
5. STEM Software Technology
It’s important for elementary education students to focus on STEM education methods in their coursework, integrating robotics, 3D printing, and STEM applications in their instructional planning. STEM opens up many instructional technology opportunities. At Grace, secondary education students even partner with OrthoWorx, a nonprofit orthopedic industry organization in Warsaw, Indiana, to spread community-wide education and training in manufacturing.Â
6. Google Fundamentals Training
As remote learning becomes more and more prevalent, being competent with Google Classroom is hugely beneficial. Education students at Grace participate in Google Fundamentals Training and become a Level One Certified Educator before they enter their student teaching semester. Through this process, they learn how to engage in professional leadership, increase efficiency in the classroom, and facilitate student learning and creativity.
