The Grace College Athletic Department will induct four members into the Lancer Hall of Fame on Saturday morning: Val Weinstein (Lundgren), Phil Dick, David James and Kris Calizo (Doron).
The 2018 induction class is Grace’s 11th class. The group will be honored at the annual Hall of Fame Breakfast on Saturday at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
“It’s exciting to honor Grace’s rich athletic history,” said athletic director Chad Briscoe. “This is an accomplished group of people who have added much to Grace Athletics. They deserve to be recognized for their contributions to our institution.”
Weinstein was a three-sport star at Grace from 1973-77. She earned 11 varsity letters while participating in basketball, volleyball, and softball. She was honored with multiple awards and was named Team MVP for the softball team.
Dick was a well-loved athletic director and softball coach for Grace, serving from 1981-94. As a softball coach he led the Lady Lancers to their first NAIA World Series appearance. He helped Grace to three 30-win seasons and also coached the program’s first NAIA All-American.
Dick will also be honored on Saturday afternoon with the dedication of the new softball stadium at Grace, named the Coach Phil Dick Field.
James was one of the most important men’s basketball players in program history. The center played from 1991-93 and was a centerpiece on the team’s NAIA national championship team in 1992. He was named the NAIA National Tournament MVP in 1992 and was a First Team All-American honoree by the NAIA and NCCAA in 1993.
Calizo was an accomplished women’s basketball player who starred from 1992-96. She finished her career top 10 in program history for both career points (1,117) and career rebounds (661). Her 45-point effort against Wilberforce in 1995 is still the school record for most points in a game.
“We want to thank those individuals who have brought much distinction and honor to Grace College and have established a tradition of Christian excellence which is incomparable,” Briscoe continued. “These achievements have touched everyone associated with Grace College both in and out of the arena of athletics.”
The Hall of Fame Breakfast begins at 9 a.m. The inductees will also be honored at halftime of the Homecoming soccer game, which starts at 2:30 p.m. To purchase Hall of Fame Breakfast tickets, call Grace’s athletic office at (574) 272-5100 ext 6266.
