Computer Science Major – General Computer Science Concentration

  • On-Campus

The Computer Science Degree is offered in partnership with the Lower Cost Models for Independent Colleges Consortium (LCMC) as a hybrid degree both on-campus and online, allowing students to take a wide array of constantly updated, cutting-edge computing courses. You’ll specialize with a concentration in application development, applied AI, cybersecurity, data analytics, or select your own set of electives through the general computer science concentration.

At Grace College, our computer science degree program is based on the truth that all people are made in God’s image and worthy of dignity and respect. This growing field is in dire need of skilled programmers and computer scientists who view fellow image-bearers as people to serve, not products to exploit.

As a computer science major, you can expect project-based courses, where you’ll create deliverables you can eventually add to your portfolio to show to future employers. We understand that some of the best learning happens outside the classroom. That’s why you’ll complete a computer science internship. Students intern at a range of organizations, such as software development companies, IT organizations, financial planning companies and even nonprofits.

With a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, you will get real-world experience and the knowledge base to continue learning, improving, and keeping up with the inevitable shifts in the computer science market.

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science FAQs

Computer science focuses on information dissemination, problem-solving, integrating computers into other forms of technology, and making tasks faster and easier through tools such as generative AI. A large component of this field is creating ways to access information quickly and using it efficiently and effectively. Read our blog, Computer Science FAQs: What is Computer Science? for more information about a computer science degree.

It’s true that computer science is a hard major, but it’s perfect for problem solvers and critical thinkers. At Grace, our computer science classes often include students with different levels of experience, and our program is designed so that a student with no experience can succeed alongside one with a background in programming.

Computer science classes include programming, data structures, and algorithms. Grace offers a variety of electives as well, such as HTML & web development.

Math is also essential for an accredited computer science program. Calculus, discrete mathematics, linear algebra, and probability and statistics are standard classes for a computer science degree.

The basic principle behind learning programming languages is that once you learn one, you’ll have the skill set down and can move from one language to another. Students at Grace are typically trained in multiple programming languages for both low and high levels, as well as object-oriented and functional paradigms. A lower-level language will train you in the details and functions of coding, while a higher-level language will automatically perform actions for you, like managing storage and calculations.

Christian ethics are vital to maintaining the integrity of computer science applications. While technology can make tasks efficient and easy, it can also be exploited and corrupted. When you prioritize your faith over profit, you create programs, coding, and other resources that truly benefit consumers on both practical and moral levels.  Grace College is one of the Christian Colleges for computer science.

A computer science degree leads you to several different jobs in areas like software development, computer programming, information analysis, or computer support.

Computer science is a fast-growing field in the U.S. with a projected 15-20% growth rate for certain careers, as stated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. With a degree in computer science, you’ll have several job opportunities where you can use your skills.

Explore Grace’s blog, What Can You Do With a Bachelor in Computer Science? for more insight into potential computer science careers.

At Grace, we offer a bachelor’s degree in computer science, which is a four-year program. You can also explore accelerated degree options to complete your degree more quickly.

According to Dr. Amy Feaver, a computer science degree is much more powerful than an IT certificate: “A computer science degree gives you an advanced skill set. This degree should get you a starting salary of about $80,000.”

“Being one of the first students to fully go through this program, I didn’t know what to expect. However, I left with a greater interest in computer science, the ability to learn new languages and structures, and goal of pursuing a grad degree in data science.”
