The School of Arts and Humanities is pleased to display “Melding Points,” by Aaron Winey, associate professor of visual communication and program director of visual arts. The exhibit features experimental photography created to explore the intersection of digital and analog elements. The exhibit started Aug. 25 and runs through Oct. 15 at the Art Gallery of Mount Memorial Hall, 1 Lancer Way, Winona Lake.
As a career designer, this exhibit highlights work purposefully created outside the boundaries of Winey’s business practice. The photography captures digital design elements filtered through hand-made glass sculptures, revealing unexpected details in the interplay of digital and analog media.
“Digital tools are essential to modern life, but the digital world is always experienced through our physical reality,” said Winey. “In Grace’s graphic design classes, we teach students to mix digital and physical media and encourage them to discover how the interaction between the digital and physical can add unexpected visual interest to their designs. The work in this exhibit explores the space between digital signals and the physical world and visually highlights unexpected results from this interaction.”
According to Kim M. Reiff, dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, “Aaron’s work is incredibly beautiful in color and aesthetic. This work conveys the essence of a process that began several years ago with an experimentation of melting glass in a kiln. The artwork not only represents a personal journey of making but allows students to better understand the importance of individual creativity that informs these unexpected paths of discovery of both physical and digital spaces.”
Prior to beginning his academic career at Grace College in 2015, Winey worked as a graphic designer for DePuy Orthopedics, Todd Allen Design, and Da-Lite Screen Company before founding Winona Lake-based Blue Note Design. He received his Bachelor of Science from Grace College and holds a Master of Fine Arts from Vermont College of Fine Arts with a focus in Visual Communication Design.
Winey will give an artist talk in the Mount Memorial Art Gallery on Friday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. The community is invited to attend the opening reception from 7–9 p.m. The exhibit is open to all without charge Aug. 25 – Oct. 15.
