Grace College Students Honored at Indiana Intern Award Luncheon
On February 5th, Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence at the 8th annual IMPACT Awards luncheon in Indianapolis. Indiana INTERNnet exists to increase the quantity and quality of experiential learning in the state of Indiana in order to retain top talent. It is a free internship-matching program linking employers, students, high schools, colleges and universities.
Three Grace students were recognized by the organization as award nominees: Carolyn Duong, Jessica Otteman, and Janelle Hess. More recently, Indiana INTERNnet honored Carolyn Duong, one of the nominated students from Grace, with a feature on their webpage.
Grace’s Applied Learning program, launched in January of 2012, has allowed 205 students to earn credit through hands-on experiences in a variety of settings and positions. Currently, Grace College offers over 160 applied learning experiences for their students. This spring semester, 58 students are earning credit, the largest number to date.
The program emphasizes commitment to active learning, real-world problem solving, and innovation. Students may experience applied learning through both traditional and non-traditional assignments. The goal is to link knowledge and skills acquired in work, research and community activities with knowledge acquired in the classroom.
“I want to congratulate each of our Grace students that received this recognition from Indiana Intern,” said Randy Polson, director of Applied Learning. “Through our Applied Learning and internship programs, our students are recognized through many different career experiences before they graduate. One employer recently shared with me, ‘We are not only using the Applied Learning program to offer experiences to Grace College students, but we look at this as a pre-interview time period. As employers, we are given the opportunity to observe the students during hands on experiences.’”
