Lady Lancers Come from Behind to Beat Marian by One
In a dramatic Crossroads League contest, Grace’s women’s basketball team held on for a 60-59 rollercoaster victory over Marian on Wednesday night.
The Lady Lancers (8-11; 4-3 CL) trailed by 16 late in the first half, but the team rallied to win by a single point. Junior Allison Kauffman powered Grace with 19 points, helping the Lady Lancers move into fourth place in the league standings.
Five minutes into the second half, Grace made a game-changing push. Despite trailing for the first 25 minutes of play, the Lady Lancers unleashed a 19-6 run thanks to Kauffman’s nine points. When the dust had settled on Grace’s run, the Lady Lancers had turned a seven-point deficit into a six-point lead at 54-48 with 7:42 remaining.
Three minutes later the Knights (11-8; 4-3 CL) countered with baskets on consecutive possessions to knot the score at 58 apiece with 3:43 to play. After a missed shot on Grace’s end, Marian earned a trip to the free throw line. The Knights made 1-of-2 to claim a one-point lead.
After each team came up empty on its next possession, Darian Patton scored what turned out to be the game-winning basket. Her shot in the paint with 2:02 put Grace ahead for good at 60-59.
The final hectic minutes after Patton’s basket consisted of four missed field goals and two missed Lady Lancer free throws. After Grace missed a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining, Marian tried to race down for a potential game winner but was unable to get a shot off in time.
Grace made an impressive 13-of-25 from the floor (52 percent) in the second half.
The first half was a forgettable performance for the Lady Lancers. Grace made 9-of-29 from the floor (31 percent) and 6-of-12 from the foul line, entering halftime behind 34-24.
The Knights led by 16 with 1:39 remaining in the period, but the Lady Lancers stole late momentum with six straight points to end the half. Darian Patton netted the final two points on a drive just before the buzzer – a sign of things to come as Patton went on to score the final points of the game.
Kauffman’s 19 points came largely from the foul line where she was a perfect 10-for-10. Juaneice Jackson was limited to nine points on 10 field goal attempts – her second-lowest shot total of the season.
Lindsey Schaefer (eight points, seven boards) and Patton (eight points, three steals) had strong performances, and Dariyan Morris scored eight points off the bench. Gabby Bryant also produced 3 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.
The Lady Lancers will have their fourth straight road game on Saturday, traveling to Huntington for a 1 p.m. game. Grace sits a game behind the Foresters for third place in the CL.
