Stichter Honored with Outstanding Educator Award
Roger L. Stichter, professor of accounting at Grace College and Indiana CPA Society (INCPAS) member since 1984, received the Outstanding Educator Award from INCPAS during an awards program on November 15. This award recognizes an accounting educator who has made significant contributions to accounting education and to the CPA profession. Stichter received a B.A. in Business from Goshen College, M.B.A. from Indiana University South Bend, and D.B.A. from Anderson University. He has a broad background in public accounting, healthcare accounting, and non-profit accounting and has taught at Grace College for over 16 years.
Each year, Stichter teaches approximately 100 students in the first-year accounting courses at Grace College. Of this year’s 100 students, only a handful were considering an accounting major when they began the class. By using his personal experience as a CPA as well as persistently encouraging students to consider an accounting career, Stichter’s influence resulted in 25 students registering for intermediate accounting, 20 of whom decided to major in accounting.
“I realize that getting this award doesn’t make me a better teacher,” said Stichter. “In a lot of ways this award is simply affirming that I’m doing what God has called me to do, so I am honored to receive the award.”
The accounting program at Grace College continues to grow — in the 2013-14 academic year over 50 students will be majoring in accounting. Grace college scored 10th nationally out of 793 institutions for 2011 in first-time CPA Exam pass rates.
