Grace College Brings Brazil to Winona Lake
Grace College is pleased to extend a friendly Brazilian bem-vindo (welcome!) to the local community as it celebrates the 14th annual Taste of the World event on Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 5–7:30 p.m. at Grace’s Gordon Student Recreation Center. This year’s Taste of the World event will focus on the food, music, and culture of Brazil.
The community is welcome to attend as Grace students host and coordinate the event, which will feature Brazilian cuisine ($6/meal for adults, kids under 5 eat free) as well as a Bossa Nova performance by “Brazilian Jazz Guy” Luciano Antonio, a Capoeira performance (a Brazilian martial art that combines dance and music), and Brazilian Ju-Jitsu demonstrations. The evening will also include games and activities for students and children.
“Attendants will be immersed in the tastes, sounds and sights of Brazil,” said Carlos Tellez, Dean of the Chapel and Global Initiatives. Grace hosts Taste of the World annually as part of its Conference on Mission. Several mission guests will be present during the evening, displaying information about their ministries.
The focus on Brazil at this year’s Taste of the World ties in with the 2012 Grace College Conference on Mission project. The goal is to raise $10,000 towards the establishment of a Ministry Training Center in the city of Uberlândia, Brazil. The center will offer opportunities for intensive Bible study, hands-on evangelism, discipleship training, and spiritual growth to those who visit. Profits will help furnish the Ministry Training Center and provide scholarships and travel expenses for those being trained.
“The purpose of the Ministry Training Center is infused with the idea of convivencia, living together,” said Bruce Triplehorn, missionary to Brazil with Encompass World Partners. “The goal of the Training Center is not to limit training to just Brazilians but to train people from Latin America and North America as well.”
