Grace Soccer Coaches Bike West, Set Record

This summer, Grace College head soccer coach Matt Hotchkin and assistant soccer coach Kyle Alcorn joined a record-breaking bike ride with 2nd Mile Adventures, a Winona Lake based ministry organization, traveling for one week with other 2nd Mile Adventure riders and totaling 258 miles through two mountain passes in a one-week period.

The men rode approximately 30-40 miles each day in the country along gravel roads through the Rocky Mountains, traveling from Saratoga, WY and ending in Dillon, CO. Each day, the men were challenged to examine their spiritual lives and explore ways to speak of Christ on a regular basis.

Hotchkin said that while he loved the thrill of “cranking up a steep climb with 45lbs of gear or ripping down a Colorado mountain pass in the early morning, “ his favorite part of the trip was being a part of a team.

“The guys that went on the trip were a huge encouragement to me.  We had some good times together and they displayed Jesus Christ to me before, during, and after the trip,” he said.

Alcorn called the trip a “massive physical challenge,” but added that “While it felt great to accomplish such a physical feat, the mental and spiritual renewal might have been the best part,” noting that he was able to live day-to-day with a lot less than he’s used to.

While the men traveled with 2nd Mile Adventures, Winona Lake’s Trailhouse Village Outdoor Store and Fort Wayne’s Summit City Bike Shop helped prep each individual’s bike for a successful trip.
