First Baptist Church is located in Southern California’s favorite four‐season, outdoor playground. Big Bear Lake is situated at 7,000 feet in the San Bernardino National Forest with over 300 days of sunshine. The winters are beautiful but not too long, and not too much snow (an average of 61 inches per year). Our ski resorts have over435 ski-able acres with 26 lifts. Our population is 15,000full‐time residents, valley wide, with holiday weekends ballooning to over 100,000. A hospital with 24‐hour emergency care is one block away, and a general aviation airport is 3 miles from our church.
Our lake is 7 miles long with 22 miles of shoreline.Summer activities on the lake include fishing, boating,swimming, sailing, jet skiing, and water skiing. Hiking trails abound in Bear Valley with elevations from 6,750 to over 9,000 feet. The Pacific Crest Trail crosses through our valley.
Our congregation has an average attendance 260 per week with a large percentage (over 60%) of 50 plus years old, with a strong desire to grow with younger families with children. We have three services per week.There is one service on Saturday night and two services on Sunday morning. Our worship songs are mostly contemporary with hymns sprinkled in. We are starting a new small group program during the week as well as a new children’s program on Sundays and Saturday night services. Our youth have middle school and high school evening programs. Our adults have bible studies during the week and a Sunday morning study. We host an ESL(English as a Second Language) class weekly.
First Baptist Church has a Board of Elders as well as a Council that oversees an annual budget of around$433,000, with 10% going to missions. Our church property, as well as our parsonage (6 blocks from church) is owned outright with no outstanding loans.
The sanctuary seats 200 with eight additional classrooms. The church staff includes six positions comprised of full and part time employees.
