Grace College Presents 6th Graders with Laura Bush Photos

WINONA LAKE, IND. – On September 29, Grace College hosted 6th grade students from Jefferson, Leesburg, Madison, and Claypool Elementary Schools.  The students participated in a day-long “Leaners are Leaders” workshop based on topics chosen in partnership with Former First Lady, Mrs. Laura Bush.  The informational day took place at Rodeheaver Auditorium on the Grace College campus, where students focused on three topics; literacy, bullying, and living conditions in Afghanistan.  Several community members led the discussions including Grace College Elementary Education students, DARE Officer Doug Light, and Sergeant Major Jim Houvener.

Following this educational event, 12 students from each school were chosen to meet Mrs. Bush in person on October 6 for a group photo followed by a question and answer session.  The 6th graders enjoyed sharing their favorite books and genres and hearing from Mrs. Bush about what she enjoys reading.

To round out the festivities associated with Mrs. Bush’s visit, on Wednesday, October 26, Dr. John Boal, Chief of Advancement for Grace College, and Professor Laurie Owen, Dean, School of Education, presented the students with their picture with Mrs. Bush.  The 6th grade teachers and principals received a copy of “Old Yeller” signed by Mrs. Bush, as well as a picture for the school.  The signed copy of “Old Yeller” will reside in each schools library.  Grace College is grateful to all of the elementary schools joining the college in welcoming Former First Lady Mrs. Laura Bush to Kosciusko County.
