Grace Hosts Book Reception for Two Recently Published Professors
On Friday March 11, the Grace College Office of Faith, Learning, and Scholarship, along with Grace Seminary, hosted a book reception for Grace professors Dr. Matthew Harmon and Dr. Tiberius Rata, who have had books published recently.
The reception was an opportunity for the Grace community, as well as friends and family of both authors, to congratulate them, purchase the books, and receive autographs in their copies. It was also a time for Grace to recognize the professors for their exceptional scholarship. About fifty people attended the reception and joined the authors in celebrating their work
Dr. Harmon’s book, She Must and Shall Go Free: Paul’s Isianic Gospel in Galatians, was published in May 2010 by the German publisher De Gruyter. Dr. Rata’s commentary on Ezra & Nehemiah was released in January by Christian Focus Publishers as part of their Mentor Commentary Series. Both Harmon and Rata teach in the School of Ministry Studies, and their books each have a unique focus and a distinct audience – while Harmon’s book is intended for other Biblical Studies scholars and specialists, focusing on the book of Isaiah’s influence on Paul’s writings, Rata’s commentary is geared more for pastors as they prepare sermons and teach in local churches.
Dr. Jared Burkholder, director of the Office of Faith, Learning, and Scholarship, said the reception was important for the Grace community as it celebrates and encourages scholarship and participation in one’s discipline. “As we are an institution that focuses heavily on teaching, there is even more reason to celebrate this kind of activity because finding time to write and research is difficult and it takes extra work and energy,” he said, adding “events like this enhance the academic culture of the campus. In addition to being relational, faith affirming and friendly, faculty members play an important role in helping to develop a stronger a culture of scholarship here at Grace.”
