Stolle Leads Lady Lancers in Final Season

8/28/10

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Grace College women’s tennis team is looking to record its fifth consecutive winning season in 2010 under head coach Deron Datzman.

Last year, the Lady Lancers struggled out of the gate to a 1-3 record, but they ended the season undefeated for a final record of 10-3 (5-3 Mid-Central College Conference), good enough for fourth place in the conference. Grace will return every key player from last year’s squad and will have the benefit of solid upperclassmen leadership.

Leading the team for her final season is Jessica Stolle, who has played as the #1 singles player her entire career. She has already rewritten the record books for the Lady Lancers, etching her name atop five different program records including most total wins in a career. She has helped Grace to four straight winning seasons and has been named All-Conference all three years.

Stolle, along with fellow senior Alisha Anthony, will be the oldest members on Grace’s quest for a conference crown. The two finished 10-3 (6-2 MCC) at #1 doubles, which was the best record on the team in doubles play.

“This will be a solid team with added leadership and experience from our juniors and seniors,” Datzman said. “I’m excited about this season because of the great depth throughout our lineup. I’m going to feel very confident about every position on our team.”

Grace’s junior class of Jenessa Jergensen, Kelli Hamstra and Andrea Redhair also will figure into the mix for a successful season. Last year, Redhair made a surprise run to the finals of the MCC Tournament at #4 singles, and Hamstra finished with Grace’s top singles record at 14-2 (7-1 MCC). Hamstra will hope to carry over the momentum from her scorching finish last year, where she won her final 11 singles matches of the regular season.

“It is a realistic goal to finish in the top three in the MCC, but we will be thoroughly tested due to the competition level across the conference,” Datzman continued. “This group gives it their best every time they step out into the court to glorify God with their abilities. It is very exciting to watch.”

The Lady Lancers open the season at home against Spring Arbor University at 3 p.m. at Miller Field.

Lady Lancers Continue Winning Streak

10/5/09

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – For the second straight year, Grace College's women's tennis team has earned 10 victories or more in the regular season.

The Lady Lancers (10-3; 5-3 MCC) concluded their season with a 9-0 sweep over Manchester College on Monday. The victory was Grace's ninth in a row and sixth sweep of the year.

"We have a lot of momentum entering the conference tournament," said head coach Deron Datzman. "We need to continue playing like we have been because the MCC is so talented."

After starting the season with a 9-0 sweep over Calumet of St. Joseph, Grace dropped their next three matches to conference opponents Indiana Wesleyan, Taylor and Marian.

The Lady Lancers followed their loss to Marian with nine straight victories, five over conference opponents (Bethel, Goshen, Huntington, St. Francis, Spring Arbor). Since their 4-5 loss to Marian, no team has earned more than two games against Grace.

"The women have a lot of confidence with the strong finish to the year," Datzman continued. "Looking forward, I expect some closer matches in the conference tournament. Our women need to be ready."

Grace will most likely play Huntington in the first round of the MCC tournament. On Sept. 24, the Lady Lancers defeated Huntington 7-2.
