Schuh will be next Grace women's tennis coach

2/27/13

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace College has handed the reins of the school’s women’s tennis program to Larry Schuh, adding to his current responsibilities as the men’s tennis coach at Grace.

Schuh has transformed Grace’s men’s tennis program into an annual contender in the Crossroads League during his tenure.

Schuh, in his fifth season as the men’s coach, led the Lancers to a share of the regular season league championship in the fall – the program’s first title in 23 years.

Prior to Schuh’s arrival, the Lancers had not earned a league victory in four years. But under Schuh’s guidance, the Lancers have advanced to back-to-back league tournament championship matches. He was named the Coach of the Year in the league in 2009.

“I felt God’s leading to take the position a few weeks ago. I have a four-year plan in place to get the women’s program in the upper bracket of conference with the ultimate goal of winning it,” Schuh said. “But most importantly I look forward to leading the women into seeing tennis as simply an avenue through which to glorify God. Tennis is an awesome sport, but it is also a way to reflect our Lord and Savior.”

Grace’s women’s tennis team has finished in the top half of the league standings in three of the past five seasons.

The Lady Lancers’ current roster features young talent. Kristin Cassidy, a sophomore, was the team’s No. 1 singles player, and freshman Taryn Wuensch played No. 2 singles.

“I am really excited to have Larry lead both of our tennis programs. He’s done an incredible job with our men, and I expect he will do the same with the women’s team,” said Grace athletic director Bailey Weathers. “Two of Larry’s strengths are growing individual players and pulling together the tennis community’s resources to maximize the opportunity for our student-athletes to excel and thrive. I couldn’t be happier than to see Larry coaching the women at Grace.”

Trio of Lancers earn All-League honors

10/8/12

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – To cap off a strong 2012 campaign, three members of Grace’s men’s tennis team were named to the All-League Team of the Crossroads League.

Seniors Michael Blevins and Nikola Todorovic and sophomore Daniel Sanchez headlined an outstanding season that saw the Lancers win a share of the CL regular season title.

Sanchez was Grace’s top singles player in 2012 and won his second straight All-League award. He finished 7-4 during his first full season playing at No. 1 singles, and he posted an 8-3 record at No. 2 doubles with Aaron Blevins.

Michael Blevins was equally strong in singles and doubles competition. He went 8-3 while playing No. 2 singles to go along with an 8-3 record at No.1 doubles with Todorovic.

Todorovic also added four singles victories to his doubles tally to win 12 matches on the season.

Blevins and Todorovic, under head coach Larry Schuh, were instrumental in Grace’s tennis revival over the past four years. During their freshman season, the duo helped the Lancers win their first league match in four years. They went on to make back-to-back appearances in the league tournament championship match in 2011 and 2012 and also won a share of the 2012 regular-season championship of the Crossroads League for the first time in 23 years.

Lancers fall in tournament title game to Cougars

10/6/12

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace’s men’s tennis team came up just short in its tournament run, falling 5-4 to Spring Arbor in the Crossroads League Tournament championship on Saturday.

The match, which was played indoors at the Warsaw Racquet Club due to weather, was a repeat of the 2011 tournament title bout.

Grace fell behind early with a pair of tough losses in doubles play. Jack Wang and Michael Humphrey were strong at No. 3 doubles with an 8-2 win, but the Lancers (9-3) still entered singles play trailing 2-1.

Daniel Sanchez and Aaron Blevins seemed to be on the verge of winning at No. 2 doubles with a few match points in their favor, but ultimately the Cougars (10-2) came from behind to win 9-8.

Aaron Blevins recovered nicely to win in three sets at No. 4 singles by the score of 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, and Humphrey earned his second point of the match with a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Spring Arbor took care of their lead, however, with wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 singles to secure the tournament championship.

“We had a great season. The guys are super disappointed because we knew it was there for us to take. If it were not for a couple points here and there, we’d be writing a different story,” said Grace head coach Larry Schuh. “We’re keeping our chins up. We knew we were co-champs in conference which hadn’t been done in a long time. It’s a lost opportunity but still an opportunity we can grow from.”

The loss wraps up the fall season for Grace. The Lancers will hope to earn a spot at the NCCAA National Championships from Mobile, Ala., on May 7-10.

Sanchez eased by his opponent at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-2, and Humphrey got revenge from a regular-season defeat to Marian with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.

Michael Blevins and Todorovic both defaulted in the midst of their singles matches after Grace had secured the semifinal victory.

“This was a great win, but it’s just step two in the tournament. None of us are satisfied,” said Grace head coach Larry Schuh. The boys are hungry and ready for the championship match. The guys are excited, but they are also hungry. They’re ready.”

HUNTINGTON, Ind. – By virtue of their 6-3 win over Huntington on Tuesday, Grace’s men’s tennis team jumped into a tie for first place in the Crossroads League.

The Lancers (6-1; 6-1 CL) can clinch a share of the regular-season league title with a win over last-place St. Francis at Miller Field on Saturday.

“Today was a really good win against a strong Huntington team. The difference was our depth,” said Grace head coach Larry Schuh. “We have a very deep team with Mike [Humphrey] and Jack [Wang] playing really well together in doubles and in singles. They’ve been a big help for us in conference as they earn wins match in and match out.”

Michael Humphrey and Jack Wang accounted for three wins combined. The duo teamed up for an impressive 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles before continuing their success in singles play.

Humphrey swept his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, and Wang won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

The No. 1 doubles team of Michael Blevins and Nikola Todorovic earned an 8-3 victory over the Foresters (3-6; 3-4 CL) to give Grace an advantage heading into singles competition.

Michael Blevins and Todorovic both had to battle for three sets before finding victory. Blevins dropped the first set 6-7 before rallying for a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.

Todorovic went ahead with a first-set 6-4 win at No. 3 singles before Huntington tied it with a 6-1 win. Todorovic clinched his match in the third set with a 6-2 win.

“This has been our best season so far since I’ve been here,” Schuh continued. “The best part about it is this is such a solid group of guys. Year in and year out, the guys compete hard but also pull hard for each other.”

The Lancers are tied with Indiana Wesleyan and Marian for first place in the CL. IWU and Marian conclude the regular season with a dual match on Saturday. 9/22/12

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace’s men’s tennis team found themselves in a battle with Goshen College on Saturday as the Lancers pulled out a crucial 6-3 victory over the Maple Leafs.

With only one week remaining in the regular season, the Lancers (5-1; 5-1 Crossroads League) have now won three straight league matches to remain one game out of first place in the standings.

The Lancers helped their cause immensely by winning all three doubles matches. Michael Blevins and Nikola Todorovic at No. 1 doubles and Aaron Blevins and Daniel Sanchez at No. 2 doubles won by the identical scores of 8-4.

Jack Wang and Michael Humphrey rounded out Grace’s doubles points with an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Despite a three-point advantage, Grace was not out of the clear as nearly every singles point came down to the wire.

Michael Blevins was victorious by the score of 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, and his brother Aaron earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.

Wang completed Grace’s scoring with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.

The Lancers won at least three games in each of their singles sets against the Maple Leafs.

“This was another tough, tough match. The 6-3 score doesn’t justify how close it was today,” said Grace head coach Larry Schuh. “This was one of those matches where we were in every single match. We could’ve won 9-0 or we could’ve lost. We need to make sure we’re playing our top game each time out as this conference is difficult across the board.”
