WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace's cross country team placed four runners on the list of 2011 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
Three runners on the men's team were named NAIA Scholar-Athletes in seniors Randy Sterk, Daniel Ng and Sean Smith as was senior Hannah Harmsen on the women's team.
In order to qualify as an NAIA Scholar-Athlete, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and be at least a junior academically.
Sterk, Ng and Smith each earned their second All-American Scholar-Athlete award after qualifying as juniors.
CEDARVILLE, Ohio – For the second year in a row, Grace’s men’s cross country finished in eighth place out of 30 teams at the 2011 NCCAA Cross Country Championships.
The Lancers were led by seniors Randy Sterk and Daniel Ng as they have been all season. Sterk was 25th out of 209 runners in a time of 26:53, and Ng finished in 27:22 for 36th place.
Ben Drew was third runner for Grace with a time of 28:01, Tim Trapp was next in 28:36, and Jonathan Rex rounded out the top five in a time of 28:43.
The Lancers were third out of five teams that competed from the Mid-Central College Conference. Spring Arbor University finished in fourth overall in the men’s race, and Malone University was first in the team competition.
“It was a much tougher field this year so placing eighth again is a nice finish to the season,” said head coach Jeff Raymond. “Our team time was more than three minutes faster than last year. I want to congratulate the seniors on their careers and say thanks for their great learership.”
Jenna McClellan also ran by herself for Grace in the women’s race. She finished with one of her strongest races of the season and placed in 50th place out of 184 runners.

GOSHEN, Ind. – As they have for much of the season, Randy Sterk and Daniel Ng led Grace’s cross country team on Saturday at the Mid-Central College Conference Meet.
Both Sterk and Ng finished in personal bests. Sterk ended with a 13th-place finish in 26:07, and Ng’s time of 26:11 was good enough for 14th place. As a result, the duo was named to the All-MCC Team.
The men finished in sixth place in the meet as a number of runners turned in PR times. Jonathan Rex (45th), Richie Cornett (66th) and Sean Smith (73rd) each had a personal record to help the Lancers to one of their best MCC finishes in recent memory.
"Our guys ran about as well as they could. I believe sixth place is the best finish for Grace in at least 7-8 years. We had several PR's and everyone competed at a high level,” said head coach Jeff Raymond. “I'm thrilled for Randy [Sterk] and Dan [Ng] that they earned All-MCC honors as they worked very hard over the past four years to be in this position. I also want to compliment senior Sean Smith on his big PR today. He's overcome several injuries in his career, so it's great to see him put together a solid race."
On the women’s side, the Lady Lancers only placed four runners and therefore did not earn a team placing in the meet.
Freshman Jenna McClellan, the squad’s top runner all season, was not able to finish the race due to an illness during her run.
Marina Ramirez earned the top time for the Lady Lancers at 21:31 (81st place).
“Three of our four women who finished had season best times, so I'm pleased with their efforts,” Raymond continued. “Jenna [McClellan] was in great position after the first mile, but unfortunately became ill. She's been our top runner all year, and I'm confident she will only get better in the future. It just wasn't her day."

The men’s squad will compete at the NCCAA Championships next weekend in Cedarville, Ohio.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a stiff field of competition at the Great Lakes Challenge, Grace's cross country team fared well, led by seniors Randy Sterk and Daniel Ng.
The men's team finished fifth out of nine Mid-Central College Conference teams that ran in the meet and 17th overall out of 30 teams.
Sterk paced the Lancers with a time of 26:29, and Ng was a few steps behind at 26:33 with a 65th place finish.
Ng's time was a career-best by nearly 30 seconds. Jonathan Rex and Richie Cornett also had PRs in the race.
On the women's side, freshman Jenna McClellan continued to lead the Lady Lancers with a time of 20:10 for 102nd place. All of the women either exceeded or neared their personal records.
"I'm pleased with the way we competed today in a field that included numerous nationally ranked teams. It was a good preview of the upcoming conference championships, as nine of 10 conference teams were in the race," said head coach Jeff Raymond. "It's nice to see our young team improving and running its best at this point of the season."
The Lancers now turn their attention to the MCC Championships on Nov. 5. The race will be held on the campus of Goshen College.

Seniors Daniel Ng and Randy Sterk paired up in the unique race to capture first place overall with a time of 52:39.
The race consisted of two-person teams from each school. The pair then alternates mile intervals in a relay-race fashion until the race in completed. The women ran a six-mile race (three miles each) while the men ran 10 miles (five miles each).
Grace took second place in the men’s competition thanks in large part to the victory by Ng and Sterk. Sophomore Ben Drew and freshman Tim Trapp were fourth with a time of 53:32, while senior Matt DeRenzo and sophomore Jonathan Rex finished eighth in 56:50.
The Lancers finished second with 13 points, just behind host Goshen College with 11. Trine University was third with 21 points.
"This was a good start for our team. It was a different format than we normally run and it was around 90 degrees, but it gave us a chance to see where we are at this point in the season,” said head coach Jeff Raymond. “Daniel and Randy really ran well, starting conservatively but winning by more than 25 seconds. I'm looking forward to see how everyone develops as the season moves forward."
On the women's side, the freshman pair of Jenna McClellan and Marina Ramirez finished in fifth place in a time of 41:10. Another pair of freshmen, Michaela Martin and Bethany Harshfield, were eighth with a final time of 44:39. Due to a minor injury, the Lancers did not field a third pair of runners, so did not figure in the team scoring.
"The ladies had solid races for their first collegiate meet. They were a little nervous, but handled things pretty well,” Raymond continued. “I know they will continue to improve in the next couple of months."
Grace will host its first home meet in several years next Saturday on September 10. The women will run on the Miller Field course at 10:00 a.m., followed by the men at 10:45.

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Entering his second season as the coach of Grace’s men’s and women’s cross country team, head coach Jeff Raymond faces two very different squads in 2011.
The men’s team returns eight runners, led by four seniors. The Lancers are coming off a seventh-place finish in a competitive Mid-Central College Conference and an eighth-place showing at the NCCAA National Championships. Raymond and the men have set the goal to improve their finishes in both of those meets.
They will be anchored by seniors Randy Sterk and Daniel Ng. The duo set the pace for Grace in the team’s seven meets last season, and Sterk finished the season with four straight sub-27 minute times.
“Our seniors will be leaders for our men’s team,” Raymond said. “They have all been here four years and want to finish with a strong season. They will be the heart of the team and help mentor the incoming freshmen both on and off the field.”
Juniors Dustin Fletcher and Matthew Brunner and sophomores Ben Drew and Jonathan Rex return to the squad in 2011, adding depth and collegiate experience to a well-rounded squad. Drew and Rex both ran in the top five for Grace in each race last season as freshmen.
Tim Trapp highlights the incoming freshmen class of four runners and shows the potential to join Grace’s top five if he can adjust to the collegiate distance of 8K.
On the women’s team, the Lady Lancers must make up for the loss of graduated All-American performers MariJean Wegert and Ashley Thomas.
The lone returner for the Lady Lancers in sophomore Marena Lodzinski. Grace also adds senior Hannah Harmsen, a first-time runner.
The majority of the roster is comprised of freshmen, with Raymond bringing in five newcomers. Jenna McClellan should be the top runner for Grace immediately, according to Raymond, with the potential to finish top-20 in the MCC this year.
“For the women, I think the excitement of the young runners is our biggest strength,” Raymond explained. “My goal is to see each person challenge themselves and improve individually. I’m not sure where we can place in the conference, but we will train toward having our best performance at that meet.”
The Lancers open the season at the University of Saint Francis on Aug. 30 at 4:30 pm.
