Lancers Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Wesleyan
Marion, Ind.-Indiana Wesleyan University captured both ends of a doubleheader over the Grace College baseball team 7-4 and 4-3 on Thursday afternoon in Mid-Central College Conference play.
Grace falls to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in the MCC. The Wildcats (9-7, 2-0) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first games opening inning and built upon their lead with two more runs in the third and one in the fourth. The Lancers would mount a comeback scoring four runs in the top of the sixth inning to make it a 6-4 game. It would not be enough as IWU would add another run in the bottom of the inning and close out the Lancers 7-4.
Junior Zach Prairie would go 2-for-3 in game one with two RBI and sophomore Joel Zakahi started on the mound for the Lancers and picked the loss with six earned runs in 4 innings of work, striking out four.
In game two, Grace scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning but IWU would answer in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own to take the lead. The Wildcats tacked on another run in the fourth inning for a 3-1 advantage. The Lancers would rally and score runs in both the fifth and seventh inning to tie the score 3-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Indiana Wesleyan senior Ryan Moore would drive home the winning run with a hit to left field with runners on first and third.
Senior Hans Griepentrog would throw 6-1/3 innings giving up four runs and striking out four in the defeat. Junior Kyle Jansma led the offensive attack with a 2-for-4 day scoring a run and junior Ryan Combs would double twice as he would go 2-for-4 on the day for the Lancers.
Grace returns to action against conference foe Huntington University on Tuesday the 25th in Huntington at 4:00 p.m.
