The Science and Mathematics Department, a department within the School of Arts and Sciences, includes biological and physical sciences and mathematics studies. Effective with the start of the fall semester 2008, the Physical Science and Biological Science Departments become part of the Science and Mathematics Department.
The Sciences
The department gives students the opportunity to study the biological and physical sciences.
Biological Science
Environmental Biology
The environmental biology program is designed to equip you for
leadership in the environmental professions. The environmental
biology program at Grace College will give you hands-on,
field-based learning, as well as traditional classroom and
laboratory experiences. Click here for more in-depth
information.
Grace biology majors are able to specialize in one of several pre-professional programs, including dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, physicians assistant, and veterinary medicine.
The study of biology involves the study of organisms ranging in size from microscopic bacteria to great whales. One feature common to such diversity in organisms is the general biochemical composition. The faculty believes that this is not the result of time, chance, and so called “natural processes,” but the result of a grand design by God the Creator: God not only created all that we know, but also gave us scientific evidence of His creation. The study of biology gives us the privilege and opportunity of viewing the details of the grand design.
Physical Sciences
At Grace, the physical sciences provide the student with insight about facts and theories of science and laboratory experience in scientific methods. Physical Science explores the basic laws, designs, and details of creation, with emphasis on scientific method, energy, matter, earth structure, and components of space. The goals of the study of physical sciences at Grace are to increase the awareness and appreciation of our surroundings in nature and to help the student appreciate the truths of creation.
Mathematics
Mathematics, the study of numbers and computation, is the field that helps students discover truths about numbers and using numbers in discovering yet other truths. Only in the past few hundred years has mankind made the most significant advances and discovered the truths contained in algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and beyond. There is much more discovery taking place today than ever before, making mathematics one of the most thriving fields of study.
