Mark M. Norris, B.A., M.Sc., Ph.D.
Professor of European and World History
Chair, Department of History and Social Studies
Dr. Norris joined the Grace College faculty in 2004. He holds his B.A. degree from Spring Arbor College and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Edinburgh.
Dr. Norris has taught at several colleges and universities, in addition to serving as a church-planter and pastor in York, Pennsylvania. His teaching experience prior to his service at Grace College includes the University of London, London Guildhall University, York College, Millersville University, Harrisburg Area Community College, and Messiah College. He also has been an editor/archivist at the Public Record Office in London and research assistant at Oxford University, England. In addition, he has presented papers at numerous conferences and continues to be actively pursuing his research interests, which include Tudor/Stuart England, modern India, and the life of Helen Thompson (“Ma”) Sunday. He is a member of the American Historical Association, Indiana Council for Social Studies, North American Conference on British Studies, and the Conference on Faith and History.

Jared S. Burkholder, B.A., M.A, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of American and World History
Dr. Burkholder joined the faculty of Grace College in 2008 after completing a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 2007. He also holds an M.A. degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and a B.A. from Columbia International University.
Prior to coming to Grace College, Dr. Burkholder taught full-time in the History Department at Augustana College (South Dakota). He has also taught part time at several colleges in Iowa and Illinois. Dr. Burkholder’s area of specialization is the history of religion in America, specifically evangelical and Moravian developments in the Atlantic World during the eighteenth century. He has also done research on Anabaptist and Brethren history. Dr. Burkholder’s experience in world history includes formal training in the history of Islam and the Middle East and he has participated in study tours in Europe and Mexico. He is currently working on a book project related to his research on eighteenth century Moravians as well as several articles. Dr. Burkholder is a member of the American Historical Association, Conference on Faith and History, American Society of Church History, Institute for the Study of American Evangelicals and the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture.

Jim Gilmer, B.A., M.Ed.
Adjunct Professor of History
Mr. Gilmer received his B.A. from Huntington University (IN) and the M.Ed. from Indiana University and is currently working on an M.Div. from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries (IN). He has over 15 years experience teaching A.P. European History at Warsaw High School (IN) where he has earned several awards for teaching and academic excellence.
David Hoffert, B.A., M.Ed.
Adjunct Professor of History
Mr. Hoffert completed a Masters in Education from Olivet Nazarene University in 2006 and teaches courses in 20th century America and Social Studies Methods.

Philip Webb
Phil is a history major from Columbus, Ohio and he has worked in the History Department for several years. He has assisted in many projects including assessment and internal research. He has also helped out in the Billy Sunday Museum and participated in an archaeological dig in Israel. Phil plans to attend graduate school in order to pursue a degree in Archaeology.
Sarah Rice
Sarah’s course of study is focused on History and Behavioral Sciences. She is currently secretary for the student-led history club, the Relics, and is fascinated with ancient cultures from around the world. Sarah is working on several projects including the department’s upcoming exhibit, “Piety and Devotion in the nineteenth century.”
